Gokarna - a medieval temple town on the Malabar Coast

Gokarna was not mentioned in guide books for many years, but this picturesque holy town is now slowly being discovered as a destination for travelers. A centuries-old Hindu pilgrimage center, Shivaratri is its biggest festival. The town center is still truly quaint, with wooden houses, friendly but unobtrusive inhabitants and a laid-back atmosphere. Gokarna is rich with religious attractions such as the Sri Mahabaleshwar Temple with its Pranalingam, the Maha Ganapathi Temple and the Venkataramana Temple. Of course, many visitors simply come for the beautiful beaches.
